Information about Homework
As a general rule, homework will be sent home on Friday and returned the next Thursday. It will be five days worth of homework. Homework should not take more than 30 minutes for both math and literacy each night. If it is more, please let us know and we can brainstorm alternatives. Expect at least 10 minutes of math homework. From time to time we will have special projects or extended writing, but it will usually be reading and math. We recommend that daily habits are encouraged, including a quiet place to work with necessary materials. The Friday to Thursday routine should provide your family some flexibility because of busy home schedules. You may choose to have your child sit down every day at the same time, or every other day for longer, or use the weekend to catch up. Let us know how this routine works for you.
I also provide time during class for students to complete their work. After they have finished their classwork each day, they may work on their homework, independent folders or independent activities. Each of these is differentiated for each student, but it is expected that their homework be completed before the following Thursday. It is their choice when they choose to complete their homework. It may be done in class, at home, or over the weekend. The reason we have homework is to practice the skills we are working on in class and small groups. I ask that the students be finished before Thuesday or that they stay in during Friday recess when we have homework club. Homework club is open to all students, it is a time when there is an adult who is there to support them in the completion of their work. They may also choose to work on the iPads if they have spoken to me beforehand and there is enough. It is not meant as a punishment, but rather a time when they can sit quietly and catch up on work they may be behind in. Occasionally I will ask students to join us for homework club if they have missed consecutive days of school and feel they would benefit from some focused support.
I will be sending home a paper copy of the homework each Friday, but if your child forgets or loses it please e-mail me or have them ask for a new one!
