Homework April 23rd-30th
1. Read 20 minutes for 5 nights.
2. Do the worksheet packet. Read the passage, answer questions and write a persuasive paragraph about a specific food.
This worksheet packet is a very traditional type of work. I am so interested to see how our students respond to it. Please send me any feedback about this style of homework. We will begin a persuasive writing unit for this month called, "Speak UP!"

Homework April 2nd - April 9th
This month our focus is fiction. Last week, you read fiction to identify story elements of CASPER (Character, Attributes, Setting, Problem, Events and Resolution to the problem). This week, you will begin to write the events of your own fiction story. In class,we are creating our character, setting and problem. Next week, we will put all of the elements together and begin to type our stories at school and home.

Homework February 27 - March 5th
Our students have learned so much about the thinking strategies over the past months! Their responses have grown in understanding and depth.
It is time to change homework a little.
Instead of reading 15 minutes and responding 5 days a week, students are to read 20 minutes for 5 nights and write one paragraph a week. Reading responses will occur in class.
We will spend some time on metacognition. How do we know when we understand? How do we know when we don't?

Literacy homework for Jan. 31- Feb. 6th
Inferring is a thinking strategy we use every day in so many aspects of our lives. Inferring differs from predicting in that it is not about the future. Last week we inferred together in class and this week it is homework. An important concept is that an inference is supported with evidence. We learned about the two sources of evidence. One place is the text itself, and the other is the readers' background knowledge. I would like the students to identify where they found the clues to support their inference.

January 23-30, 2012
This week we will create a home connection with nonfiction research. Students chose a place to study (city, state, or country) and are filling journal pages of wonderings. As we begin research, I am encouraging students to look in books, internet and interviews for answers.

Happy New Year! What is in store for 2012? Any predictions? This week, students are writing predictions for their homework responses. :) Students are to read 5 nights and write 5 predictions about their books. I would also like for them to read on and see if their predictions come true...

Literacy homework for Nov. 7th - 21st.
The next few weeks are filled with change. As the leaves fall from the trees and the snow covers the ground, we begin to shift our habits. This week, we have school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but Thursday and Friday are off for teacher assessment work and Veterans Day. The following week, families are invited to come at 12:00 on November 18th, 2011 for a second grade feast.
Our homework will also be a little different.
Our homework will also be a little different.
- Students are expected to read 15 minutes a night, but will not need to write a response. Our focus in school will continue to be the main idea, so students can share that with you orally.
- Plan out the homework. This week, students are to write a paragraph about the important traditions in your family. What is important to you as a family unit? What has passed down through the generations? What parts of your culture do you continue from your elders?
- Next week, students are to write a “HOW-TO” family recipe. Please help them write the recipe and then create the dish to share at the November 18th feast. The recipe is not due until Nov. 21st.

We have just four responses this week with our four day weekend. Homework is due Tuesday.
Our new thinking strategy is Sensory Images. It can be called, "Visualizing, Mental Images, or a Picture in Your Mind." The question to ponder is, "How does this strategy help you understand the text?"

Literacy homework for the week of Sept. 26th - Oct. 3rd
This week, homework is a little different.
1. Students will still read 5 days for 15 minutes, but their responses will not be written. Instead, I would like them to do an ORAL retelling of what they read. They will start practicing the strategy of retelling with detail from beginning to end, in sequence, including characters, setting and events, the "who, what, where, when, why." If your child read non-fiction, encourage them to retell as many facts as they can. It takes a long time to write this, so our first step is to recall and retell orally. :) Please sign the homework page to confirm the retelling.
2. Fill a quart sized bag with artifacts you can use to “wake up ideas” for
stories. Remember Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge,“What’s a Memory?”
3. Friday, October 7th, we will be celebrating “Absolutely True”
stories about you, like the stories we read in, Gooney Bird Greene. That
day, you will come to school dressed up like the character in your story (YOU!
but with props and clothes from your story). So, your job this week is to write the
first draft of that story. I will be modeling in class and you will be writing at home.
My story will be called,“The Day We All Ate Worms!” Next week, we will revise and edit in class.

Dear Families,
We will update homework on this page. As a general rule, homework will be sent home on Monday and returned the next Monday. It will be five days worth of homework. You may choose to have your child sit down with a snack after school and work for 25 minutes, or every other day for longer, or use the weekend to catch up. Expect at least 15 minutes of reading with a short response and math homework. From time to time we will have special projects or extended writing, but usually it will be reading, responding, and math.
Again, please let us know if you have any questions, concerns or ideas! :)

Literacy - As we get to know your children, there may be some confusion around homework, etc. Don't worry. Encourage your child to do the best they can within the 30 minute maximum time, and then we can sort things out at school the next day. :) Click on the documents at the top of the page if your child misplaced their homework. This week is the introduction of the reading response homework and the strategy of using Prior Knowledge (Background knowledge or schema) to make connections to text and increase comprehension.

Below is the letter sent home on Thursday, August 18th. I am sorry if there was any confusion. Anticipating that we would have enough composition notebooks, I asked that students decorate TWO. One for writing and one for reading. Unfortunately, we did not have enough and I only sent ONE home. A generous parent purchased 25 more and we can now send another one home on Monday. Thank you!!!!
We look forward to reading the letters that you write about your child!
August 18, 2011
Homework is due on Monday, Aug. 22nd, 2011.
This week our homework is a little different than it will be in the future.
1. Parent letter – Dear parents, please write a letter to Mrs. Umberger and Mrs. Beckler. Include anything you want to share about your child. It would be terrific if you placed it in a sealed envelope, so we can be confidential. We encourage you to write about what your child is interested in, your hopes for their second grade year, any concerns, any medical highlights, your specific ideas about involvement in the classroom, any family arrangements, etc. Your email address and contact info would be great, too!
2. Decorate Readers and Writers notebooks – During literacy we use our notebooks constantly. Please help your child find materials to decorate. The notebook should have your child’s name, and the words “readers” or “writers”, on each notebook.
3. Book from home – This is not required, but it would be wonderful, if your child brought a book to share with us. They can read it at school or take it back home. Please put their name inside (on a sticky note?)
Thank you for all your support! Please contact us if you have any questions, concerns or comments.
